Show Details Note: Dayton Hammons, 90, formerly of Gaars Mill, died January 11, 1981 at Willis Knighton Hospital in Shreveport after a long illness.
While in Winn Parish, Mr. Haommons served as Justice of the Peace, was a deacon in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church, an active Mason, and a prosperous farmer. He spent his retirement years in Shreveport where he was a deacon and active member of the Broadacres Baptist Church for many years. At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the church.

Services for this Winn Parish native were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 13 in Edmonds Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield with Rev. Dan Fletcher, pastor of Shreveport Broadacres Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Gaars Mill.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Lessie Sikes Hammons and a son, Lt. John D. Hammons who was a casualty of World War II.

Survivors are a son, Samuel Dean Hammons of Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle H. Parker of Shreveport; a brother, Hilton Hammons of Winnsboro; three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were John L. Hammons, Richard Shaw, Gene Humphrey, Clio Adams, O. C. Fordham, Clyde Parker, Jack Hammons, and Edgar Hammons.
